One of my clients had a major breakthrough. After declining to participate in a group project she said she "couldn't" do, she decided to do it anyway! “What inspired you to go ahead with this project,” I asked. she paused and said, “I finally heard myself WHINING.”
I loved her for saying that. She admitted something so many of us do when we’re scared to try something new. We whine. We make excuses for why we can’t. And then we feel bad about ourselves for not being able to have the life we say we want.
Fortunately, she was aware of what she was telling herself. And she was tired of believing the story that she wasn’t “good enough” to join in a fun opportunity. Despite feeling uncomfortable trying something new, she did it anyway and is now feeling great about the experience!
So often, we stand on the edge of the life we want, making excuses for why we “can’t” have it. These excuses are the way we keep ourselves on the outside looking in, and wishing so badly we could step into it.
In this episode of Growing in Uncertainty, I talk about what to do if you catch yourself whining when you want something you think you can't have.
